UltraBoost: Best Foam I've Ever Experienced

groovc · Jul 17, 2018

5/5

Overall

For a couple of years, I kept hearing and reading about Adidas' Boost foam but never took the plunge since it had been more than 20 years since I last wore Adidas for running. I found a pair of UltraBoost ST's at my local run shop on clearance and decided to give them a whirl. WOW. UltraBoost is for real and is the most comfortable midsole I've ever experienced. The claim of feeling the same at 5K and 500K is pretty much true from my experience. This is the shoe I take for all my long runs and it just gives a consistent ride. One aspect of the foam that I have yet seen on any other shoe is that it feels the same regardless of the temperature. All my previous shoes would feel "less" comfortable when they were cold and would only soften up once they warmed up. These just feel great no matter what. Frickin' materials science! The prime knit makes for a comfortable upper; however, during warm weather, it can get a little swampy in there so I try to wear thinner, breathable socks. My only knock on the shoe is the weight. This is a heavy shoe but the comfort more than makes up for that. The added benefit is that it helps make my racing flats and tempo shoes feel amazingly fast. They're pricey but they will last a long time and you can get a lot of miles out of them.

Was always super injury prone with stress fractures. Switched to this shoe and its the softest, smoothest, most responsive shoe I have ever worn. I switched sophomore year of college and I have worn them ever since. They run a half size big, so if ordering, order a half size smaller than usual.

A different experience

Overall

Have run in Brooks and Saucony for years, and this shoe is very different. It is much softer. Although heavy it feels quite fast and responsive, with good flex. A big plus is the rubber sole, which has the best grip of any shoe I have run in. The downside is I am not sure it is quite as supportive as other mild support shoes, but that may just be the extra cushioning.
