Overall

Got these spikes to replace some worn-out Nikes, and to see what all the fuss was about them. Hoka hyped them up and had Leo Manzano (2012 Silver-medalist in the 1500) heavily involved in the development process. Having now ran in them, they kinda live up to the hype. They feel great, the asymmetrical construction takes a little getting used to, but it makes flat turns feel like they're a 200m banked track (in the sense that they make it feel like you're leaning into the turn; seems to work, feels like it's very easy to carry your speed through the turn). They can feel a touch thin in the heel, so maybe not a great choice if you're a heel-striker. On the whole, though, they're fantastic spikes, and their unorthodox construction just might give you that vital edge on the field.

Disclaimer: The ratings for the shoe I've given are compared to other track spikes in general. I've always struggled with track spikes, all of them have been too narrow of a fit for me (In the midfoot, I got those Asian feet that spread out with a wide midfoot and wide forefoot) and the spikes I wore before (Asics Hyper LD 5) were too heavy for my liking though I enjoyed the spike plate. The Evo Speed R got what I enjoyed about the Asics Hyper LD 5 and improved it. For one, the Evo Speed is lighter. My main complaint about the Asics Spikes I had before was the weight of the shoe, having a lot of unnecessary overlays that added weight, to put into perspective my racing flats Adidas Sub2 were lighter than the spikes. So the weight reduction of the Evo Speed has helped a lot. Second, the spike plate. I enjoy having a spike plate on my track spike, I've also gotten Altra's spikes which are amazingly light and fit wide. However, the lack of a spike plate was its main problem, the spike plate for me gives a spring in my step that allows me to close that final 400m faster and stronger. Seeing the asymmetric spike plate on the shoe was great, giving me the spring in my step. Finally, these shoes fit wider feet, I've always had trouble finding a good track spike that was lightweight and had a spike plate having to compromise between the two. But the Evo speed finally has brought the best of both worlds and put them in a wider foot package. However, I can see this as a problem for people with narrower feet, and I probably won't recommend it to narrow footed people (but they got the Nike Victory which is the shoe I can compare the Evo Speed R to). My biggest problem with these shoes though was the price. $220 AUD is a lot for me and is the most I've spent on any shoe I've ever gotten. Overall it's a blast of fresh air to finally get a wider spike which ticks almost all the boxes for me, and will be going to these shoes in the future
