Variants of this shoe
Some shoes have multiple versions of what is essentially the same shoe, with variations in style or materials. We try to group these together. Retailers sometimes list a version number wrong, and our system can treat those mislabeled names as variants.

How it ranks
The HOKA Speedgoat 5 sits about average for trail shoes in our data. Cushioning and looks are its strongest sub-ratings. Value scores well below its other sub-ratings. The rating is based on 17 runner reviews and 6 other rated shoes in the Speedgoat product line.
Confidence
How settled the rating is against every other rated shoe. A shoe can rate high on confidence with relatively few reviews of its own when its product line has a long record and external ratings from retailer sites agree. Confidence is low when we have few ratings or when runners disagree.

Based on
The bars show roughly how much each source contributes to this shoe’s rating. Their influence depends on how many reviews we’ve collected, how many earlier versions are in the product line, and the external ratings available.
“They do not have the water-resistant features of the earlier models nor the traction, so they have limited value on muddy or wet trails.”
“The midsole goes dead after 200 miles.”
“My feet move around more inside the shoe, which is also not great on descents and results in more loose pebbles getting inside.”
“Changes to the shoe do a better job of keeping small rocks and gravel from entering the shoe.”
“In one 16 mile trail run there is already some noticeable tread wear.”
“The shoe fits great and the traction is what you've come to expect from the Vibram Megagrip.”
“This shoe feels great on my foot and it offers a great ride and has superior traction.”
“The 5's also do not have as much cushioning as the 3's and 4's and their durability is not nearly as good.”
“There is slightly less cushioning than the Speedgoat 4 but it still offers a soft landing.”
“The upper can be a little loosey goosey.”
“Keep my feet warm and dry, great traction, fantastic cushioning.”
“Heel tab is really pronounced.”

Overall
The Speedgoat 5 is a fantastic update to the Speedgoat. I've ran in these dating back to version 3. The shoe fits great and the traction is what you've come to expect from the Vibram Megagrip. There are only two downsides. The upper can be a little loosey goosey and the midsole goes dead after 200 miles.

The HOKA Speed Goat is a comforatble and nimble trail shoe. The lugs grip well and while they don't have the full cushioning that you expect from a HOKA there is enough to be comfortable without losing the feel of the trail.

3/5
Overall
I've run in the Speedgoat model for over five years now, primarily on trails, but also on roads and runs comprising a mix of both. I absolutely loved the Speedgoat 3 and 4's. The 5's are lighter, lower profile, and roomier. They do not have the water-resistant features of the earlier models nor the traction, so they have limited value on muddy or wet trails. I used the Speedgoat 3's and 4's to play golf and hike, but the 5's are much more breathable and dangerously slippery on damp rocks. My feet move around more inside the shoe, which is also not great on descents and results in more loose pebbles getting inside. The 5's also do not have as much cushioning as the 3's and 4's and their durability is not nearly as good. Overall, the 5's are more of an everyday shoe that would work well in the Western US on drier trails, but they are not appropriate for Eastern US trail-running. I will have to find a new go-to trail shoe.
