How it ranks
The Nike Free 4.0 trails most daily trainers in our data. Looks and comfort are its strongest sub-ratings. Value scores well below its other sub-ratings. The rating rests on 15 runner reviews and 1 other rated shoe in the Free 4.0 product line.
Confidence
How settled the rating is against every other rated shoe. A shoe can rate high on confidence with relatively few reviews of its own when its product line has a long record and external ratings from retailer sites agree. Confidence will score low when we have few ratings or when runners disagree.

“It's light, low, nothing extraneous about it—I can barely feel it there and that's great”
“Flexible, great fitting shoe—snug in the ankle, ample in the toebox”
“By the end of run 3 I'd worn a groove in the foot pad and my feet weren't sliding around anymore”
“The heel of my foot extends backward over the heel section of the sole, which should not happen”
“Lots of room in the toe box, unlike most Nike shoes I've tried”
“Every heel-strike feels like I'm going to lose my balance”
“With flyknit shoes, more of your stability will have to come from your glutes and other core muscles”
“Comfortable but doesn't last like most Nikes”
“It's not wide enough, and doesn't come in wider sizes”
“Don't go trail running in them”
