Great Everyday Trainer

Anonymous runner · Jan 12, 2020

Overall

I have been using this shoe for my current marathon training. I use it for my track, easy, and long runs. I have had zero issues with it and enjoy the 6mm drop and responsive midsole. I guess my one gripe would be that they wear out fairly quickly. However for a do it all daily trainer that cost $100 it’s hard to complain.

They broke this shoe, and it's breaking my ankles

Anonymous runner · Dec 31, 2019

Overall

I have LOVED the 870 series. I ran my marathon PR in 870v2. And I bought 4 pair of the 870v4. But the 870v5 has killed my ankles. First run in them, I twisted my left ankle. Second run, I twisted my right. And a month later, I twisted my left again - so badly, I'm currently in recovery mode. And I'm not one to turn my ankles - in the past decade, I can't remember having an ankle injury. The only thing I've changed is the shoes. Tomorrow, I'm heading back to my running store to swap these out.

Great potential, poor quality

tipperboi · Aug 10, 2019

Overall

I was immediately disappointed by these shoes. The plastic overlay the laces go through at the top of the shoe was halfway off on the left shoe. The material of the rear upper was the same as those mats they put down in public schools. The grey polyester ones with ridges of rough fuzz. The shoe felt cheap. I know we are in an age of $160 premium daily trainers, but I figured for $110 New Balance could produce a light trainer that was at least passable as premium. They do with the new 890s! I felt ripped. The shoes fit a little small for me right when I put them on, and I was worried they would be too tight. They loosened up a lot after the first run, and have fit like a glove since. The ride is perfect for my tastes. Firm, responsive, but plenty of cushion for a relatively efficient runner to use as a daily trainer. The transition is smooth; I've run paces from sub 4:00 to 7:30 in them. All feel good. The rubber on the outsole is race car tire soft, and the grip is good. An unfortunate side effect of this: the rubber portion of the outsole is breaking down faster than the exposed foam. If the quality were passable, this would have been my new go to shoe. I would have used it for everything. New Balance would have had my $110 every month and a half (until they inevitably go on sale). Unfortunately, I will never be buying them again. Maybe for less than $50? That's what they feel like they are worth.
