Only shoe I've ever run in that hurt my feet

2/5

Overall

I found this for a great price and thought it was worth giving a shot. It was my first experience with Hoka. I've run in a kinds of shoes since getting free ones in college, some right for me, some not. I trust that shoe companies all make wearable running shoes and my feet haven't had a problem handling anything... Until now. They are certainly bulky. It's funny that I can't change my shorts or pants without taking them off first. But immediately on a shake out run to break them in my feey started burning. It got so intense I had to take them off and walk home. I doubled up my socks and kept at it thinking thay after a while prehaps it would go away. It didn't. I got up to 50 miles and I was thoroughly pissed. I eventually switched out the insole with a retired pair of Ons, and that made them runnable, sort of. I tried doing some slightly uptempo stuff in them as I thought it best to keep my runs in them short. Both of my feet cramped up terribly and again I had to take them off and walk home. I find it pretty astounding that a company that specializes in running shoes could make something so challenging to run in. I like the cushoining as a recovery for my aging joints after track sessions. This is all they are good for to me.

Hoka Bondi 5

4/5

Overall

In short: not light (will expand), cushioned but firm, exceedingly comfortable for long distance. Profile: Ex-collegiate D3 runner (3 yrs ago, nothing special), average 60 MPW, 16:50 5k. (Impressions after out of the box 18 mile run , avg 7:16/mile) The HOKA Bondi 5 at first glance is a brick of a shoe, decided to take it for a very hilly 18 mile jog through the country. Although the weight is something like 12 oz it doesnt feel that heavy. The weight is distributed in a way that doesnt feel like two bricks strapped to your feet. While im not saying the shoe feels light it doesnt feel like a 12 oz shoe. I never experienced any sort of lower leg fatigue during the 18 miles. This shoe has the classically thick sole that hoka is known for. Pleasantly surprised that instead of a marshmallow feel it was a more firm cushion that your feet sit on rather than sink into. I have had previous problems with my feet feeling beat up after 15-20 miles in other shoes (like clifton, tracer, challenger ATR) but not so with the Bondi. The bondi really embodies hoka's idea of maintaining momentum while running. This shoe really excels in the long/easy run department.

I have absolutely loved my Bondis! They are extremely thick, which doesn't make for the "coolest" looking shoe, but they are very comfortable and provide me with the extra support that I need. They come in a variety of great colors as well!

Post-collegiate

5/5

Overall

The first week to two weeks definitely took some time to get used to. In college I primarily trained in racing flats, 100-120 mpw, but the years of pounding left me with some pretty horrendous achilles troubles. I'd gone through about 4 different pairs of shoes before finally landing on the Bondi's as a last ditch effort to save my precious tendons. Overall I am quite pleased with how they have turned out. For any sort of uptempo work you will definitely want a faster shoe. But for regular training, even up to 'solid' runs, these have served me well. I also feel better about doing more miles on the road than on dirt in these, my bones feel a little more protected. You'll just have to get used to people giving you shit about how they look. Own it.
