Overall

I use this shoe when my legs and body are really tired and sore. This is not a performance shoe but a very good recovery shoe and long slow run shoe. The shock absorption is great. When I was a collegiate runner I would not have used this shoe but being 30 years older and 25 lbs heavier this shoe is great for the easy days. The fit of model 5 is a little roomier in the toe box which I find better even though my feet run slightly narrow. The ride of the shoe feels similar to model 4 but I think the material of the new model offers more durability along with the outer-sole.

Hoka One One Bondi 5 - Completely new shoe from the previous Bondi

4/5

Overall

The Bondi 5 is a fine shoe so I won't complain but it's not even remotely close to the previous models. it's heavier, doesn't have the same nice soft feel, terrible foot turnover. I used to feel like the Bondi 3 and 4 were the perfect shoe for a big guy to race long distances in. I wouldn't race in the Bondi 5. However. Where the shoe does excel, after I got it figured out, is as a long distance trainer and easy rest day cruiser. The shoe can't run fast so don't try and make it. The durability is incredible - I'm over 325 miles in it and the sole barely has any wear. Also the new upper is bomb proof. The old bondi mesh had issues with holes but nothing is opening on this shoe. Not 100% sure I'd buy these again but they are some value for big guys who don't run to fast.

Old guy tries again

4/5

Overall

This shoe is so comfortable I wore it home from the store. Six months after a hip replacement it was time to run again, despite what my doctor says. Soft shoes on a soft surface is all I can manage and these shoes added 10 minutes to each run. If you need cushioning more than anything else, this shoe is for you.
