Great for big days on the trail but the uppers just don't last

4/5

Overall

I'm convinced that hoka's are my shoe. it took me awhile to admit this because i don't really want it to be true. They are weird-lookin. But, they are light, really, really comfortable, and perfect for long days on technical trails, which is about 90% of my running. However, I've had 4 pairs now, I think?? and the uppers on each pair have shredded in exactly the same place, which is at the bottom of the laces where the crease forms in the toe box. It's a bummer because in each case the outsoles still had a ton of life left in them but I'm literally diving off rocks in these things because my foot is about to fly out. Funny thing is, they're still the best. I need a new pair of speedgoat 3's right now. Help a brother out???

the GOAT do-it-all trail shoe from Hoka - SPEEDGOAT

5/5

Overall

Disclaimer - if you like "ground-feel" in a trail shoe, this isn't for you. The Speedgoat is a soft shoe but firm enough to feel good in loose terrain and responsive enough to transition to roads well enough. It's a "performance fit" meaning that it's pretty narrow and not available in a wide model. It isn't the lightest shoe you can buy but it's not clunky and feels smooth enough for faster trail days as well as slow days. The grip is great but not for the worst possible conditions, with a vibram outsole with something like 4-5mm lugs.

Great ride. I have a fractured foot and it gives great cushion on fire roads. Light and speedy. Great transition to the pavement

Tight up front

4/5

Overall

Found the toe box to be less than roomy. Short as well as narrow. Having said that they held up really well on first run of approximately 10 miles. Used in a trail half marathon though and I developed some pretty harsh blisters. Tread is awesome and the shoes are very grippy. Would love to try them half a size bigger to see if space issues resolve
