Exceptional shoe for hiking/trail running

Anonymous runner · Sep 28, 2025

4/5

Overall

I've logged 500 miles in these shoes on exceptionally rugged/rocky trails. The toe caps started peeling off at 200 or so miles, but it did not end up being a problem and they only very recently started to develop holes on the inside toe box. I like to rotate through shoes and wore these mostly every other day, and I did notice a definite drop in cushioning when I did not give them a chance to rebound. I should be able to get another 200 or so miles out of them of hiking and light hill work, but they are too flattened to be my go-to shoe. Love the Altra zero-drop! I naturally and comfortably forefoot strike in these shoes, while with previous shoes I naturally have a mid- to heel-strike

So far the lone peaks have been an absolute pleasure to run in. The large toe box has been a game changer it terms of comfort. I do wish the ride was more responsive and the cushioning was more durable.

The Lone Peak line are my favorite ever trail shoe

Anonymous runner · Sep 28, 2025

5/5

Overall

For a person like me with a wide forefoot/toebox, Altras have been a godsend. The Long Peak shoes, in particular, are extremely comfortable right out of the box and have my preferred balance of tread, cushion, and ground feel. I'd recommend them for trail runs longer than 8mi, but they're light enough that shorter they're decent as well. They hold up well over time, and their tread is great for everything up to extremely rocky/icy in which you might want something more specialized. I would not say Altra has the most aesthetic shoes, especially their trail models, but they've gotten better and they're not loud or offensive. Overall any versions of the Lone Peaks have been fantastic shoes I'd highly recommend (and I've owned the 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5 and 4s).

Altra shoes are a great leap forward for humankind, but their durability is questionable.
