Trail shoe for the roads

Overall

I love this shoe. Originally was running trails with it, but shoe is so comfortable and light weight I train on all surfaces and race in this shoe. Well fitting and very comfortable.

Go-to ultra trail race shoe

Anonymous runner · Sep 28, 2025

5/5

Overall

I'm always rotating between several shoes so it's hard to designate a shoe that I currently run in. I do love the SG2s and its my current goto for any trail ultra. I've used them for distances from 50k to 100m so far. They are protective and lugged aggressively enough for most varied terrain that I've encountered (from loose volcanic soot to wet laom encountered in the PNW). They are nicely cushioned with a rocker roll to make up for the lack of responsiveness. My main issues are durability as the upper was already blowing out lateral to my 5th toe after 30 miles (and I don't have wide feet) and they're not the most supportive shoe for me personally as I have a bit of a pronation issue. I like them enough that I have a spare pair in reserve for when my primary pair finally die

The small toe box gave me black toenails

Anonymous runner · Sep 28, 2025

Overall

My only issue with this shoe is that the toe box was a lot smaller than some of the other Hokas I've worn. There is nothing wrong with the shoe itself- just that if you are used to a wider toe box, you will be disappointed and possibly hobbled.

Love everything except the durability

Anonymous runner · Sep 28, 2025

Overall

Right out of the box felt great, very comfortable, barely needed any break-in miles. On even the gnarliest trails the cushioning has been outstanding, even used it for a 34 mile trek through the white mountains with no issues at all, very comfortable. My only quibble is with the durability, I have now probably put in about 80-90 miles, but the top between the PU sections there are small tears everywhere. Also, after I bought another pair, I noticed that the PU top cover on that new pair was slightly different, not having the small interruptions anymore and basically being 1 solid band (?). Perhaps Hoka discovered the inherent weakness with the previous PU topper...

Speedgoat 2 review

Clawhammer · Sep 28, 2025

5/5

Overall

The Speedboat 2 from Hoka is a very cushioned trail shoe. Some people may think that Hokas on the trail are a bad idea because of the stack height but this shoe is probably the most stable shoe I've run in on the trail. It is surprisingly nimble and quick feeling. It's a great downhill shoe. I feel less beat up after long runs in the Speedgoat. The shoe isn't great on the road if there is a portion of the run there. It seems to lose responsiveness and you can feel the lugs.
