nice update on an old workhorse

4/5

Overall

In the beginning, I was an Asics GT-2100 series runner. This was when basically everyone wore support shoes because you were running so you needed support to save your knees. (We've evolved since then.) Ten years went by before I tried the Brooks GTS Adrenaline. It was a good shoe, maybe too much support, but a little bit lighter feeling than what had become the Asics GT-2000v1. I rotated in and out of Asics 2000s, 1000s, and Brooks Adrenalines and Ravennas for a while. Now, finally, there's an Adrenaline that doesn't feel clunky. The GTS 18 is, in my opinion, the best of the recent Adrenalines, and much better than any support shoe Asics has put out. The support feels reasonable. It transitions well. It's lighter than last year's Ravenna 8. And it handles the thrashing you expect from a no-frills daily trainer. The fit is maybe a quarter size shorter than past Adrenalines--so a good rule of thumb is to order a half size up in whatever your shoe size is, or, even better, try one on somewhere. I stayed in my usual Brooks size for the 18 because I'm between sizes and always size up--so instead of being a little big, the shoe fits nearly perfectly. There are whispers in the shoe world that this coming year's Adrenaline GTS 19 will move the Adrenaline from the classic posting support system to Brooks' Guide Rails (the system they use in the Transcend and the Pure Cadence). Perhaps that will be biomechanically better for runners, perhaps not. It's possible the GTS 18 is the last, stellar model of its series. Meaning it's probably a good time to buy up a few pairs.
