NIKE PEGASUS 40 - A Very Consistent and Reliable Show

Overall

Although I don't believe that the Nike Pegasus 40 is the best Pegasus version that Nike has made (39 is better), it is still a very good shoe.

The Pegasus 40s are an everyday trainer, but they are durable enough to be used for workout and long runs as well as daily easy runs.

The Pegasus 40s are a very flat shoe, with little arch if even any. That is a good thing for me, as it benefits my running style.

Bastion of traditional design

Overall

Most neutral trainers today have switched to forefoot rocker, even traditional favorites like the Nimbus, Cumulus, and Ride (and the pseudo-minimalist Kinvara)! But the Pegasus endures. The Peg 40 is my first Pegasus- in the past I liked the aforementioned trainers from other brands. I don't like forefoot rockers (I know what I'm talking about- I've run hundreds of miles in Hoka Cliftons and newer Saucony Rides- it just feels muted to me) so the Pegasus is the shoe for me.

I used to be afraid of heel-toe drops above 8mm, but I find the 10mm Pegasus is pretty good. Minimalist rhetoric appeals to me, but I find solace in the fact that many very fast people have run a lot of their mileage in the Pegasus or shoes like it.

I like the forefoot air pad. It makes the ride feel much more cushioned. Although it is a little weird because I can distinctly feel the forefoot air pad when I am standing or walking. Also, the heel cushioning is very good. I think I usually mostly midfoot strike, but sometimes when I'm running down a hill slowly I heel strike and these feel fine with that.

After straying a bit, the Pegasus is back to being the best running shoe for me

I loved everything about the version of the shoe I bought in 2014, but after several years of good performance for my low mileage (<10 miles/week), I finally needed a new pair in 2020. I bought it online (for obvious reasons), and was disappointed from day one with the elongated sole in the back, the fabric, and the fit. The 2023 version (#40) is very similar to the 2014 version, but with upgrades in "ride" and fit that are actual improvements!
